It's Up to You to Find Beauty in the Ugliest of Days

Beauty and looks are a major issue in society.
As we look back through time we can see that our view of what 'beautiful' is has changing so much that it makes us question whether we really understand the meaning of beauty. For instance, in the 1950's Marilyn Monroe was classified as the most beautiful whereas today Alessandra Ambrosio is. Marilyn was a size 14, Alessandra is a size 2. These contrasting views really show a drastic change in society.

I choose to own a different perspective on what beauty really is. It pains me to think that not everyone is classified as beautiful; we are all so different so it should be incredibly hard to compare how people look? My looks couldn't be compared to Marilyn's, as I look nothing like her. This raises the question of what people decide is beautiful. I will never understand how one can be described as being 'the hottest' or 'the most stunning' when it is near impossible to compare. This issue alone promotes extreme insecurity within teenagers, insecurity about weight, looks even how hot or sexy they are considered. These have become priorities within some people's lives when it really shouldn't. 50 years ago this wouldn't have happened.
The amount of torment girls go through to look hot and sexy is completely unnecessary, and the media is actively helping to fuel this insecurity. Although I have strong views on this subject, it does not mean I am completely confident with my looks, I am quite the opposite. I know how hard it is to be one of the 'ugly' girls in school and not have a 'rocking' body or anything like that, and it does manifest within me. This pressure is an unnecessary strain upon the already emotional and hard lives of the average teenager, is it really necessary for the media to keep hammering it in? Do they not realise how un-confident we already are about our looks?

Every single magazine out there, including newspapers, features some sort of section describing fitness routines or makeup tutorials. This simply re-emphasises my previous points on how much the world relies on an 'image', one that you can create by painting on makeup and spending endless hours in the gym. Its a tough job.

Besides 'beauty' always being associated with looks, I believe that there is and always has been such thing as a 'beautiful personality'. Personally, I believe that this is more important than looks; but thats just my opinion. I know several people with a beautiful personality and they are an absolute joy to be around, a breathe of fresh air compared to the constant nastiness often surrounding teenagers, especially girls. Unfortunately whilst these people are few and far, the other kind is found in plenty. This makes me realise how fortunate I really am to know such lovely people that help me survive this constant battle.

However, one thing that never ceases to amuse me, is how people no longer look at the beauty of the world we live in. Have you ever stopped to think how small our problems are in comparison to the rest of the world? Tiny. Not even worth a second thought. Why should I be worried about what one person has said when on the opposite side of the world there are virtually untouched mountains and beaches where the sand is so white, it almost looks like snow. Even the thought of this shifts all my problems into perspective and reignites my passion for travelling. Have you ever thought how beautiful a single leaf of a tree is? Or how amazing the sky and clouds are? Just think about it.

I have finally managed to address my opinions on what I believe to be an incredibly important issue, especially in the world we live it.
